Why should I consider gum recontouring?
Because your smile is an important feature, it is important that your smile look good and exude the confidence you feel. Some smiles might seem to show too much gum, while others might show too little. And sometimes this can look unhealthy. Through gum recontouring, Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Folck can create a healthier and more appealing smile.
What is gum recontouring?
Gum recontouring is reshaping the gum tissue with a laser for asymmetrical or uneven gum lines, and “gummy smiles,” where too much gum is showing. Because the gums “frame” the teeth and shape the smile, too much tissue or unhealthy looking gums can mar your smile.
How does gum recontouring work?
It is fairly easy. After Dr. Folck discusses what you wish to do in the initial consultation, the procedure can begin. If Dr. Folck is correcting a smile with too much gum tissue showing, he will first anesthetize your mouth. Then, using a soft tissue diode laser, Dr. Folck will vaporize the unwanted tissue. The heat of the laser is absorbed by the water in the gums, which breaks apart the molecules and causes the tissue to vaporize. There is no danger to the teeth, and the laser seals the tissue immediately, so there is no need for stitches.
Will gum recontouring fix my smile?
For some people, gum recontouring is all they need to improve their smile. If the laser treatment is not enough, Dr. Folck might discuss further procedures, such as teeth or bone replacements. Porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns can add to a smile you are happy with.
Are there any side effects?
Because the gum recontouring procedure is over quickly and the laser seals your gums, there is no bleeding. This will help your gums heal more quickly than they would with stitches. You may experience mild discomfort, tenderness, and possible swelling for a few days.
How do I know if I’m a candidate for gum recontouring?
If you have a gummy smile or an uneven gum line, you are a candidate for gum recontouring. After determining that your gums are healthy, Dr. Folck can perform this procedure, giving you a smile where your teeth, and not your gums, are the focal point.
