Healthy gums are a vital element of a beautiful smile. Without strong, healthy gums, even the whitest, brightest smile can suffer from cosmetic and structural damage, even tooth loss.

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a very common condition, even among many people with exemplary dental hygiene. Dental plaque becomes embedded beneath the gums, where it isn't reachable with a toothbrush or floss. This can spread damaging bacteria, causing the gums to recede, which can, in turn, lead to dental decay and even tooth loss.

While it can be difficult to avoid gum disease entirely, we offer simple, non-surgical gum treatments that can treat and even cure gum disease in its early stages, so that you never suffer the long-term damage of untreated periodontal disease.

In our initial periodontal exams, we use the state of the art Florida Probe system, a minimally invasive tool that helps us determine the location and severity of gum disease.

In the majority of cases of early stage gum disease, we perform a simple, minimally invasive procedure called scale and root plane. Designed to reverse early damage and to prevent future gum disease, a scale and root plane is a procedure in which we clean the plaque directly under the gum line, then carefully plane the tooth root so that the surface is less amenable to future plaque accumulation.

Depending on the extent of the procedure, a scale and root plane procedure may be completed over one or more office visits. During each visit, we will numb the area we'll be working on, then gently scrape the plaque away, and carefully texture the surface of your tooth root to prevent future periodontal disease.
