Tooth Decay Beneath a Crown

When a tooth becomes severely decayed, a simple filling may not be enough to stop or repair the damage. In these instances, a crown is your best option for stopping further damage from being done.

Tooth decay is caused by sugary foods. The bacteria that live in plaque eat the sugars and produce an acidic waste product that eats at tooth enamel. Sometimes these acids can continue to eat at enamel for up to 20 minutes. Over time, the damage done by this acid can cause cavities.

Cavities can be painful. They can also cause bad breath, and discolored teeth. If left untreated, cavities can lead to abscess, resulting in fever, swollen glands, and deep throbbing pain.

In the case of severe decay, it may be necessary to fit the tooth with a dental crown. A crown fits perfectly over the decayed tooth, preventing further decay, eliminating pain, and restoring function and beauty.

Like fine China, anything, when properly taken care of, can last a lifetime. Teeth are, however, not like fine China. Teeth need to be strong, able to withstand tension, and compression to ensure maximum comfort and ease. You might also want them aesthetically pleasing.

TMD Symptoms

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can be a huge inconvenience to your daily life, and in severe cases is quite painful. Fortunately, this problem is easily corrected. Our staff is very experienced in handling TMD cases and can provide you with first-rate treatment for your symptoms.

It is important to remember that your jaw is extremely complex. As a result, TMD can take on a variety of forms and lead to different symptoms in different people. If you suffer from TMD, you can expect to experience several of these symptoms, but most likely not all of them.

The most commonly experienced symptom is a clicking or popping sound made when you move your jaw. Generally, you will be the only one to hear these noises.

What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder?

Dental bonding vs. porcelain veneers

Dental bonding is a versatile procedure. Relying on a composite resin, it can be used to repair a variety of dental problems and to cosmetically enhance teeth. Bonding can repair chipped, cracked, and discolored teeth. Bonding can also be used to restore decayed teeth. Porcelain veneers can address a similar range of issues, but unlike bonding, veneers are not used to repair decayed teeth.

With dental bonding, the bonding material used to cover teeth is made of a mixture of glass and porcelain particles dispersed in a liquid plastic. The solution is designed to match the color of your teeth. It’s applied to teeth and allowed to harden with the use of a high intensity light. In contrast, a porcelain veneer is made entirely of porcelain. A porcelain veneer is applied to a tooth surface after the enamel is removed. The tooth is coated with a resin cement to allow the veneer to stick to the surface of the tooth.

Both porcelain veneers and dental bonding can produce a brighter smile. Because the porcelain material of a porcelain veneer is translucent, it resembles the natural enamel of the tooth. A dental bond tends to be more opaque and thus may provide a slightly less natural look. Additionally, a porcelain veneer will generally resist staining though a dental bond will not.

However, there are reasons why a person may prefer dental bonding to veneers. A dental bonding procedure can be done in a day while veneers typically take at least two visits. Veneers can last ten years or more with proper care but they are not indestructible. If damaged, a veneer cannot be repaired. In contrast, while a dental bond may be less long lasting, it can be more readily repaired. Additionally, dental bonds tend to be less expensive than veneers.

Teeth whitening: Can You Whiten Too Much?

Like anything taken to extremes, too much teeth whitening can have some undesirable consequences. Tooth-whitening products often contain bleach and so some of the side effects of too much bleaching can include irritation of the gums and the inside of the mouth. If you’re using a tray-based tooth whitening product, you can ask Dr. Folck to fit you for a customized bleaching tray so that the whitening product does not contact your gums and the inside of your cheeks.

If you’ve been whitening your teeth too much, you also may be increasing the sensitivity of your teeth, particularly if you are using glycerin-containing or more concentrated peroxide products. Some tooth whitening products may even be too acidic and can erode tooth enamel. Other signs that you’ve gone too far include the appearance of teeth that are translucent and unevenly whitened.

You should also bear in mind that teeth whitening is not for everyone. Your gums and mouth should be healthy before a whitening procedure. Choosing sedation dentistry for anxiety and pain

Teeth whitening and sensitivity

Bleaching gels can provide great tooth whitening effects. However, many bleaching gels include glycerin. Glycerin is often added to tooth-whitening products to remove water from the surfaces of the tooth so that the bleach or peroxide in the gel can do its work. The downside of using glycerin is that teeth can become sensitive. High concentrations of peroxide and frequent teeth whitening procedures can also increase your sensitivity.

There are a few ways to reduce sensitivity after teeth whitening. Dr. Folck can use a product that doesn’t contain glycerin. He may also apply fluoride to the surface of your teeth to reduce any sensitivity you may experience. Additionally, your dentist can recommend that you use toothpaste for sensitive teeth for a few days or weeks before and after a tooth-whitening procedure.

Dental hygiene and bad breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be caused by poor dental hygiene. It can start as soon as food enters your mouth, since what you eat begins to be broken down almost immediately. Poor dental hygiene—failing to brush and floss regularly—means that food particles will remain in your mouth even after a meal. This can lead to the growth of odor-causing bacteria on your tongue and on your teeth or dentures. Other bad dental hygiene habits, like smoking or chewing tobacco, also can cause bad breath.

Additional causes of bad breath include dental health problems, which are usually made worse by poor dental hygiene. These dental health problems include gum disease (resulting when toxin-producing bacteria irritate the gums), poorly fitting dentures, infections of the mouth, and tooth decay.

Practicing good dental hygiene is an important aspect of preventing or eliminating bad breath. Brush and floss regularly, and preferably soon after meals, to remove food particles from your tongue and between your teeth. If you wear dentures, make sure they’re cleaned well every time you remove them and at least once a day. Drinking water to stimulate salivation can help wash away bacteria and food particles as well.

Porcelain veneers and dental hygiene

Porcelain veneers can last more than ten years with good dental hygiene. In addition to regular brushing and flossing, regular visits to Dr. Folck’s office can help you maintain good dental hygiene.

You don’t need to worry about porcelain veneers coming off during a cleaning. They’re bonded to your teeth with a glue-like substance when they’re fitted. Some of the technology used by dental hygienists may be too harsh for your porcelain veneers. For example, the use of power polishing equipment can damage the surface of a porcelain veneers. Ultrasonic scalers, which are typically used to remove plaque, are also instruments to use with care since they can cause chips in veneers. Using polishes containing pumice or other harsh abrasives can cause chipping or pitting of a veneer’s surface. Finally, if you’re receiving fluoride treatments to prevent tooth decay and enhance your dental hygiene, be sure that your dental hygienist is using a neutral fluoride. More acidic solutions are not recommended for people with porcelain veneers.
