Plaque, a sticky film that forms on your teeth, is home to number of different kinds of bacteria. Sugar feeds these bacteria, and the waste product is an enamel eating acid. Tooth decay occurs when a tooth is eaten away by the acids formed by plaque-inhabiting bacteria. These acids cause demineralization of the tooth, leaving holes (cavities) that can lead to infection, and even cause tooth loss. The best way to prevent tooth decay is through regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings.

Symptoms of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay has no actual symptoms. Cavities caused by tooth decay however, can have many symptoms. You may notice:

  • Spotting on the teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Tooth ache, or a tooth that is sensitive to pressure

Tooth aches may become worse or be particularly sensitive to things such as:

  • Cold air
  • Sweet food
  • Chewing
  • Regular brushing

Severe tooth decay may result in abscess. The symptoms of abscess are:

  • Fever
  • Swollen glands or jaw
  • Deep, pulsating pain

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should contact Dr. Michael Folck right away.

Preventing Tooth Decay

The most effective weapon against tooth decay is a consistent oral hygiene regimen. Brushing your teeth at last twice a day with a soft tooth brush (making sure to brush along your gum line and tongue) with a fluoride tooth paste is the most basic step. Flossing should also be performed at least once daily to remove plaque and food that stick between teeth.

In addition to regular brushing and flossing, you should visit your dentist every six months for a deep cleaning and checkup. Tooth decay can be spotted and treated by your dentist before it becomes a problem. Fillings and dental crowns are the most common form of treatment for a decayed tooth.

Dental Crowns and Tooth Decay

Crowns fit over the decayed area of the tooth, providing a new, decay free surface. A crown will require two office visits. During the first visit Dr. Folck will:

  • Prepare the tooth by removing all decay
  • Make an impression of your tooth to ensure your crown matches it perfectly
  • Fit your tooth with a temporary crown to protect it from further decay and discomfort

During your second visit your crown will be fitted and cemented into place.

You can expect your crown to function safely and effectively as a new tooth right away. Like natural teeth, over time crowns may become chipped or cracked. When this happens you may need to have it reattached, or have a new crown made to replace the old one. Along with an at home oral hygiene routine, regular checkups are important to ensure the integrity of your crown.
