What Is Tooth Bonding?
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Tooth bonding is a procedure in which a composite resin is applied to your teeth to correct minor cosmetic and functional issues. Tooth bonding is effective in:
- Restoring decayed teeth
- Whitening teeth impacted by stains and discoloration
- Closing minor gaps
- Improving the appearance of crooked teeth
- Sealing chips and cracks
Tooth bonding is another name for the material used in white composite fillings. The resin can be mixed to match your natural tooth shade, providing an aesthetic solution for many common cosmetic dental problems.
Tooth Bonding Process
Using a mild etching solution, Dr. Folck will create a textured surface that enhances resin bonding. Depending on the application, composite resin may be applied in layers. Each layer is hardened by a special curing light before the next layer is applied. Once the final layer has been applied, Dr. Folck will sculpt the resin to provide for a seamless smile, and the resin is polished to better approximate the appearance of tooth enamel.
The layers are hardened in a matter of minutes. The entire process generally takes one to two hours.
Ideal Candidates for Tooth Bonding
Tooth bonding is an ideal alternative to more invasive processes like porcelain crowns. While not suited to everyone’s needs, tooth bonding is perfect for people who have minor cosmetic imperfections and decay that has resulted in functional and aesthetic discomfort.
Dr. Folck will work closely with you during your initial consultation to help you determine if tooth bonding is the best choice to correct your smile. Tooth bonding may not be a good solution for patients with large gaps or serious functional issues. If this is the case, you should consider porcelain restorations that have not only a superior cosmetic effect, but can add strength to your teeth, including:
Which solution si right for you depends on the type and extent of the problem you are trying to correct.
